Think you have what it takes to run a news website? Play the new web game Paywall!

January 28, 2010 · Leave a Comment

As the New York Times prepares to implement a pay-wall (again), it will undoubtedly turn some of its web readers away while others will pony up the cash to read the Gray Lady.

To understand what sort of effect this can have on a news website, someone at Harvard’s Nieman Journalism Lab created a web came called Paywall!, which allows you to adjust the parameters on a news site to try and turn a profit without turning away your readers. Check out the link below.

Jan. 21 foreclosure auction

January 19, 2010 · Leave a Comment

Eighteen bank-owned homes in the Tucson area will be sold at auction at 7 p.m., Thurs., Jan. 21 at the Four Points by Sheraton Tucson University Plaza, 1900 E. Speedway.

The foreclosed homes are being sold “as-is” and can be viewed by contacting the listing agents to schedule an appointment.  The auction is being conducted by Texas-based Hudson & Marshall, Inc.

Property details are online at www.hudsonandmarshall.com or by calling (866) 539-4172.

Prior to the auction, buyers can purchase property by visiting the website and clicking the Bid-Now icon.  According to Hudson & Marshall, sellers typically respond to offers within 24 hours.  This is a reserve auction, which means sellers have the right to accept, reject, or counter any bid.

All homes come with an insurable title, no back taxes or liens, according to Hudson & Marshall.  Buyers are required to make a cash or certified check deposit of $5,000 for each property that they are the winning bidder.

In states like Arizona, banks are aggressively discounting foreclosed properties at auction to move them off their books.

Press Releases for Stupid Products: “Etre Touchy Gloves” are hobo chic

December 8, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Here’s a lesson in selling bacon to a pig:

Etre Touchy gloves are a fun way to keep your hands warm and dry while using mobile phones, music players, portable games systems, cameras and other electronic devices. Their missing thumb and index fingertips allowing you to touch, tap, stroke, slide and pinch these devices’ displays in any way you desire – a facet of their design that is particularly important when interacting with touch-screen devices like the iPhone and iPod Touch, since their capacitive touch-screen technology means that they only respond to your bare naked fingertips.

I find it ironic that this product came from England, a place forever associating fingerless gloves with Dickensian street urchins. Now, you can show off your wealth by not only thumbing your iPhone, but showing people you still have three glove-fingers left.

The gloves are made from 100% lambs wool and are available in four different sizes – men’s, women’s, youth’s and children’s – and in four different colour combinations:

-Charcoal with turquoise trim
-Grey with rose trim
-Black with charcoal trim
-Chocolate with mint stripes

What troubles me about this product is not so much that they can be easily created with a pair of scissors, but that the senders of this press release thought people in Tucson would be interested in something like this. Tucson, as you can guess, never gets anywhere near to freezing and when it does, you won’t be outside on your phone. (Cold weather here starts at 70 degrees, hardly glove weather by any standards.)

For the very British price of £19.99 ($32.66 for us Yanks), you’ll never have to worry about removing your gloves to check your apps again. For the curious: http://www.etretouchy.com/
